Picket fencing
Low front garden fences, and what to check first on an open plan estate.
A picket fence is a low, open fence of upright pales, usually under a metre tall. It marks the boundary of a front garden and keeps small children and dogs in without blocking the view.
Typical Crawley prices
Around £100 to £175 per panel width, or roughly £55 to £95 a metre. Painted finishes cost a little more.
Check before you fence a front garden
- Next to a road, fences over 1m usually need planning permission
- Many Crawley estates were designed with open plan front gardens, and some deeds include covenants against front fences
- If you rent from the council, you need written permission from Crawley Homes first
Common questions
Can I put a picket fence on a low wall?
Yes, but the total height counts towards the 1m limit next to a road.
Is my front garden open plan?
Check your deeds or ask your solicitor. Look at what neighbours have done too.
